FAQS FOR SHOPPERS (SEE BELOW FOR FAQS FOR ARTISTS)
(PRINTS) Does Picture A Healthier World print the photographs in its gallery, or do artists print the photographs? Most often, artists submit image files to us, and we work with a highly regarded New York City-based professional printer to offer you superior quality prints and custom frames. However, we also offer artists the option to print their photographs and ship the prints to us. This allows for artists to have control and consistency with their prints. This option is available for unframed prints only. In these instances, you will see a note indicating that the photograph is "Printed by Artist" in the product description.
(PRINTS) On what paper are photographs printed on? For images printed by Picture A Healthier World, unframed photographs (both black and white) are printed on Kodak Professional Endura Supra Luster paper. This paper results in soft, smooth, realistic flesh-tone reproduction, intense blacks and enhanced detail from highlights to shadows. Framed photographs are printed on Fine Art Satin Photographic Paper, which is a non-reflective paper fit for framing and is very similar to Luster paper in its texture. For photographs printed by the artist, the paper varies and will be indicated in the product description.
(PRINTS) I would like to frame the print I am buying. What material are frames made with? All of our frames are made with a material called Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF). MDF is a high grade, composite material made from recycled wood fibers and resin. MDF is machine dried and pressed to produce dense, stable sheets that do not contract like wood does when subjected to changes in heat and humidity. Many professional photo printers offer MDF as an alternative to wood frames for this reason. All prints are mounted to ensure a professional look, and come with wire, nails and hooks for hanging. If you choose to include a mat (white or black) with your frame, we offer only acid-free mats. This prevents yellowing and deterioration that acid can impose on the mat, frame and photograph. Please note that only images printed by Picture A Healthier World are available as framed prints. Images printed by artists are not available with frames.
(PRINTS) How does a frame and mat affect the size of my print? Framed prints are available both with and without mats. All frames are 1” thick, so adding a frame to your print without a mat increases the outside dimensions of both the width and the height by two inches (1” on each side). So, for example, an 8 x 10 print will measure 10 x 12 along the outside perimeter. Mats are 2” thick, so adding a mat (2” on each side”) and a frame (1” on each side”) increases the outside dimensions by 6 inches (3" on each side) to both the width and the height. So, your 8 x 10 print will measure 14 x 16 along the outside perimeter.
(PRINTS) Are prints signed by the artist? For photographs printed by Picture A Healthier World, prints do not include an artist’s signature. For photographs printed by artists, prints might include an artist's signature. If so, this will be indicated in the product description.
(PRINTS) I ordered a framed print. Why doesn't my package have Picture A Healthier World branding on it? Our project is structured to minimize costs so that we can maximize the support we provide to global health and human rights projects. For that reason, framed prints are mailed to you directly from our professional printing partner, once printed and inspected by a team of experts, so you will not see Picture A Healthier World branding on your package. You will receive a separate letter in the mail with your printed receipt. Unframed prints, greeting cards and items from our "Positive Messages" section are sent to you directly from our office in Brooklyn, New York and include Picture A Healthier World branding.
(PRINTS AND DIGITAL FILES) I would like to see a high-resolution version of the image before I make a print or digital purchase. Is this possible? Absolutely! For photographs printed by Picture A Healthier World and photographs available with a digital license, we will be happy to send you a watermarked version of the file for you to examine before making your purchase. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the request. For photographs printed by the artist, upon your request for the high-res file, we will contact the artist on your behalf to ask if it would be possible to make the high-res file available to you.
(DIGITAL FILES) After I have purchased a digital license, when and how will I receive it? When customers purchase a digital product, they're sent a download link to the email address they have entered. Once a customer clicks the link, they have 24 hours to download the product before the link expires. Be sure to check your spam mailbox in case the link ends up there!
(DIGITAL FILES) What is the difference between an editorial license and a commercial license? Works available for editorial use are newsworthy images reflecting events from social, cultural and political scenes and have been taken in public and typically without the consent of the individuals in the photo. Editorial images can usually be used within an editorial context to illustrate truthful articles or presentations such as those appearing in magazines, newspapers or any other editorial context, in either printed or electronic media. Editorial images are not suitable for commercial use(s). If an image includes an identifiable face(s) and the artist does not have a signed model release for each face, the image can only be sold with an editorial use license. Likewise, if the image includes recognizable property (ex. a storefront), logos, or characters (ex. Mickey Mouse), the image can only be sold with an editorial use license if the artist does not have a signed property release. In the United States, the right to free speech (upheld in the First Amendment) broadly protects the ability to publish a photograph for a newsworthy purpose. Courts do not require that the photograph show the actual person or setting described in the book, article, etc. Rather, there just needs to be some relationship between the subject or setting discussed in the publication and the photograph.
Works available for commercial use may be used for promotional purposes such as in newsletters, advertisements, packaging and marketing materials. Unlike editorial images, images for commercial use may be edited as necessary for the intended use. Images downloaded with a commercial license can also be used for editorial purposes, only if they are not edited or modified in any way that distorts or misrepresents reality. To learn more, please visit our Terms and Conditions page to read the details of each of the four licenses we offer (One-time Commercial Use license, One-Time Editorial Use license, Unlimited Commercial Use license, Unlimited Editorial Use license).
(DIGITAL FILES) What is the difference between a One-Time Use digital license and an Unlimited Use digital license? An Unlimited Use (also known as “royalty free”) license allows for the unlimited use of an image in any media defined in the licensing terms, as opposed to a One-Time Use (also known as "rights-managed") license, which refers to an image that needs a specific license stating the material surrounding the image and the number of times the image can be used. Picture A Healthier World offers offers both Unlimited Use and One-Time Use licenses. The license available for each image depends on the preference of the artist as well as the content in the image. To learn more, please visit our Terms and Conditions page to read the details of each of the four licenses we offer (One-time Commercial Use license, One-Time Editorial Use license, Unlimited Commercial Use license, Unlimited Editorial Use license).
(GREETING CARDS) What paper is my greeting card printed on? All of our greeting cards are printed on 100% recycled paper with a matte finish. Paper is an FSC-certified sheet that is biodegradable, recyclable, and acid free (so it won’t yellow with age!).
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Will the artists know that I purchased one of her/his photographs? Yes. When you make a purchase, artists are notified that an anonymous customer purchased his/her photograph (your name is not provided to the artist), the customer's choice of what programming the proceeds will support, as well as approximately how much will be contributed based on the sale (ex. 10,000 gallons of water purified). When you add an item to your shopping cart, you also have the option to thank the artist with a personal note. You may choose to include your name in this note.
(ALL PRODUCTS) Do you charge sales tax? All prints, framed prints, greeting cards and stickers shipped to New York state will be charged sales tax. The exact percentage is based on the location to which items are delivered. Digital license orders are not subject to sales tax.
(ALL PRODUCTS) Are you a non-profit organization? No, we consider ourselves a social enterprise. We sell goods in the open market and reinvest the profits into programs that support different global health and human rights projects run by third parties (such as UNICEF, Pathfinder International and FXB). We do not run programs or fundraise to run programs ourselves. We select projects to support based on research around current global health and social justice needs and best practices in programming to address those needs.
(ALL PRODUCTS) How much money from my purchase will support global health and human rights projects? All profits from sales of prints, greeting cards and digital files are donated to the organization we are supporting at any given time, which is currently UNICEF.* We contribute the entirety of net profits to the designated non-profit organization (i.e. UNICEF), after accounting for the cost of printing materials and for Picture A Healthier World’s operational and administrative expenses, which include but are not limited to website development and management, website hosting and subscription fees, preparing and packaging art, marketing and customer relations. We are committed to keeping these expenses as low as possible, directing 25 cents or less of every dollar of the purchase price of each item towards operations and administration. For example, when we sell an 8x10 print for $40, the money is directed as follows:
- Printing Materials: $6.06 (15.2% of sale price)
- Administration and Operations: $9.94 (24.9% of sale price)
- Donated to UNICEF: $24.00 (60% of sale price)
The 25% retained by Picture A Healthier World to maintain and grown the project is significantly lower than galleries (which retain on average 50% of each sale price), third party stores selling products such as greeting cards (which retain on average 60% of the sale price) and stock agencies (which retain on average 80% or more of the sale price for non-exclusive images). We do all we can to keep our costs as low as possible, such as by self-managing our website and keeping our presence to online only so that we are not paying for retail space or in-store mark-ups. We expect that the resulting donation will yield the minimum amount of services listed below, based on the donation Picture A Healthier World will make to the organization currently receiving profits (UNICEF), and that organization's estimates as far as the services a donation of that amount can yield. For this reason, please note that the amounts listed below are estimates.

For photographs printed by the artist, the resulting donation (and corresponding services supported) depends on the price set by the artist and the artist's cost of materials. For example, if an artist mails us a print to sell in the Picture A Healthier World gallery for $100, and indicates that the cost of materials to create the print is $25, we will reimburse the artist $25 of the sale price as soon as the print is sold. Of the remaining $75, $50 will be donated to support global health and human rights services and $25 will be directed towards Picture A Healthier World’s operational expenses.
Please Note: UNICEF, which is currently the non-profit recipient of profits from sales of our prints, greeting cards and digital files, is not a participant in or sponsor of the Picture A Healthier World project. Picture A Healthier World will make a tax-deductible contribution to UNICEF in support of its Inspired Gifts (currently water purification tablets, malaria prevention pills and Art in a Box) every quarter (February 1, May 1, August 1, November 1) based on sales made in the previous quarter. If our sales have not raised enough funds to purchase the Inspired Gifts we support, we will include the amount raised in the subsequent quarter's contribution to UNICEF. The addition of frames to your purchase does not increase the amount donated for the print, nor do purchases of items in our “Positive Messages” selection (stickers). If you utilize a discount code for your purchase, the expected quantity of services supported by your purchase as listed in the table above is subject to change.

FAQS FOR ARTISTS
(PRINTS) Can I provide my own prints, rather than submitting electronic files to you for printing? Yes, artists can select the option on the Photo Submission Form to print and mail photographs (unframed only) to Picture A Healthier World, so that we can ship them to customers when an order is made. This allows for artists to have more control and consistency with their prints. In these instances, we will put a note in the product description that the photograph is "Printed by Artist."
(PRINTS) Can I sell my photograph as limited edition prints? Yes. Please specify the size and quantity of limited edition prints that Picture A Healthier World should make available (whether the image is printed by Picture A Healthier World or by the artist) in the "Limited edition prints" field on the Photo Submission Form.
(PRINTS) I am an artist mailing prints to Picture A Healthier World. What is the process?
- The artist completes the Photo Submission Form for each image you are submitting.
- The artist emails us (at email@example.com) a low-resolution version of the file for us to post on the website. The file should be 1000 pixels on the larger size.
- Picture A Healthier World responds to that email with a mailing address and instructions for sending us the prints. Picture A Healthier World will also request that the artist send them a quote for the shipping costs so that Picture A Healthier World can reimburse the artist for shipping, and payment information so that the artist can be reimbursed for materials costs each time a print is sold. Note: Artists who provide their prints may only sell unframed prints on the Picture A Healthier World platform.
- The artist mails the prints to Picture A Healthier World.
- Picture A Healthier World emails the artist to let her/him know when the prints are received.
- Picture A Healthier World stores the prints in our office in Brooklyn until they are sold. If at any point the artist wishes for us to return to her/him any or all of the prints, Picture A Healthier World will mail them back to the artist within 7 business days.
(PRINTS) Can I share more than one image with the project? Absolutely! You may submit as many images as you would like for consideration. You can choose to submit images for sale as individual prints, or you may submit a series (ex. 3 images) for sale as a set. If you submit images for sale as a set, please make a note of this in the "Additional notes/specifications" box on the the Photo Submission Form.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Can I specify the format (printed and/or digital) in which I want to sell my photograph? Yes. On the Photo Submission Form, you can select how you would like us to sell your image (printed format and/or digital format with a One-Time Use license or an Unlimited Use license).
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Can I ask PAHW to sell my photo in printed and/or digital format at a price that I set? Artists who print their photographs may set their own prices for their prints in the "Pricing" field on the Photo Submission Form. For photographs printed by Picture A Healthier World as well as for all digital licenses, we have set standard prices.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Can I submit my image to PAHW, but also sell it in my own gallery or elsewhere? Absolutely. All images in our online gallery are sold on a non-exclusive basis. The artist retains the copyright to the image, and only gives Picture A Healthier World a non-exclusive license to sell prints or sub-license the image with a digital license. More detail is available in our Submission License Agreement.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Do I maintain the copyrights to my image? Yes. Artists retain copyrights to their photographs. If the artist chooses for PAHW to sell the photograph in digital format, the artist gives Picture A Healthier World a non-exclusive license to sub-license the image. If your image is sub-licensed, you will be credited for digital use of your image ("@Artist's Name, Image courtesy of www.pictureahealthierworld.org") according to the terms of our Submission License Agreement.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Am I financially rewarded for sharing an image? No, contributing artists are not financially rewarded for sharing an image with the project.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) What should I do if I decide I no longer want my image on the Picture A Healthier World website? In our Submission License Agreement, we specify that we will guarantee removal of any images from our website within seven (7) business days of receiving the request. We will do our best, however, to remove the image within 24 hours of the request.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Is my image protected from website visitors who may try use my image without purchasing a license? Visitors are restricted from accessing the high-resolution version of your image if they attempt to drag and drop the image or save it to their desktop. They are only able to access a low-resolution version that would be insufficient for printing in any of the sizes we offer.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Will you adjust my image before you post it to the website? We generally will not alter your image before posting it to the website, although all photographs are reviewed and, if needed, edited by a professional photographer prior to posting. We may, for example, increase the photo's color saturation, adjust brightness and highlights or crop the image. Please note that we may also convert a color photograph into black and white. However, if you would not like us to edit your photograph before submitting it to us, please make a note of this in the "Additional Notes/Specifications" box on the Photo Submission Form. Before submitting a photo, please make sure the brightness and highlights have been adjusted (if needed), and that it has been examined for blurriness and over-saturation and adjusted accordingly. Please check your files for blurriness at 100% zoom before submitting them. If you do not have editing software, we recommend downloading Gimp for free.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Do I need to be invited to submit a photo, or can I submit one without being invited? Our global gallery is curated by a team of specialists with diverse backgrounds in the visual arts. We generally reach out to artists whose work we admire. However, we are absolutely pleased to consider work submitted by artists who have not been invited to contribute to the project! Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with more information on yourself and the image you would like to share, or submit the image to us via the Photo Submission Form.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) After I have submitted an image, when will it appear on your website? Once we receive and accept your image, it will appear in our online gallery within seven (7) business days (or as soon as we receive the physical prints from you in the mail if you are providing your own prints). Because we do not require you to create an account with a personal login, please double check that your contact information on the Photo Submission Form is accurate so that we can notify you when the image has been posted. Please also make sure that "email@example.com" is on your white list so that the email does not end up in your spam folder.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) One of my images used to be on the Picture A Healthier World website, but I no longer see it in the gallery. What happened? With the relaunch or our project in January 2018, we re-examined the photographs in the Picture A Healthier World gallery to ensure that all images adhered to our rigid technical standards. We regret that we were unable to retain all of the images that had been submitted to the project. Reasons for not retaining an image include too small file size, blurriness or uneven sharpness in the focus area, insufficient lighting or incorrect exposure, or the image has too much noise (often faint white speckles). We are extremely grateful for each image that you have shared, and hope that you will consider submitting another image to the project in the future.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) I have been invited by Picture A Healthier World to submit a photograph, or my request to submit a photograph has been accepted. I would like Picture A Healthier World to print and ship my photo to customers, rather than printing the photograph myself. What are the standards for the file I should submit to you? We ask that files adhere to the following technical requirements:
- Format: Please submit JPEG or PNG files in sRGB color space.
- Size: Please submit the largest file size you have of the image. We prefer images at least 4000 x 3000 pixels, if possible. This is very important, as larger file sizes allow us to sell larger prints, and larger prints translate into more support for global health services.
- Proportions: We prefer images cropped to match the 8 x 10, 8 x 12 or 10 x 10 print proportions. However, you may submit irregularly-sized images to us, and we will confirm that our printer is able to make prints in the proportions you provided.
- Imprints and Trademarks: Please do not submit photos with a date, watermark, logo, or any other imprint.
- Recognizable Faces or Property: If your image has a visible face(s) and you would like to sell it as a print or with a digital commercial license, you may submit a signed model release (feel free to use your own releases or the sample Adult Model Release or Minor Model Release) for each visible face. Likewise, if your image includes recognizable property (such as the outside of a restaurant) and you would like to sell it as a print or with a digital commercial license, you may submit a signed property release (feel free to use your own release or the sample Property Release). In the absence of a signed model or property release, you may submit the image for "editorial use only" purposes by checking the relevant box on the Photo Submission Form. For more information on images available for editorial use only, please visit the FAQs for Shoppers (above).
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) I have been invited to submit a photograph, or my request for submission has been accepted. How do I transmit the file to you, and what information do you need? Please see the instructions on the Photo Submission Form page for details on transmitting files and completing the form.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) I have submitted a photograph to you for consideration. When will I know if it has been accepted into Picture A Healthier World's gallery? Within seven (7) business days, we will confirm that the photograph has been accepted for inclusion in our gallery and will send you the link to your listing on the Picture A Healthier World website.
(PRINTS, DIGITAL FILES AND GREETING CARDS) Will I be notified when Picture A Healthier World sells one of my photographs? Yes! When a shopper purchases a photograph that Picture A Healthier World prints and ships directly, artists are notified within 30 days. (We wait 30 days to notify an artist because an item can be returned or exchanged within 30 days). Included in the notification is the programming the shopper chose to support, as well as approximately how much will be contributed based on the sale (ex. if a shopper purchased an 8 x 10 print and selected “Water Purification Tablets,” approximately 4,705 gallons of water will be purified). Additionally, when shoppers add your photograph to their shopping carts, they have the option to "thank the artist" with a personal note. If a shopper has submitted a "thank you" note, we will email this to you as well.
